Our Elder Council
The SMCC Elder Council exists to oversee the fellowship and empower leadership broadly within the congregation by focusing on people , prayer, preaching, leadership effectiveness, and church-wide finances.

Jim Alden – Vice Moderator
Jim and his wife Sara have been attending SMCC since 2005. During this time he has served as a Stephen Minister, Transition Team Member and currently as Elder. With a background in Psychology and hunger for eternal results, Jim has a tremendous passion for shepherding and counseling. He currently works as a Salesman and Consultant in the Market Research industry and assists Sara with managing their small business. God has graciously entrusted them with an amazing son - McKinnon.
Dale and his wife Jan relocated to Southern California in 1983 and joined SMCC in 1989. Dale served his home church in various capacities in Lincoln, Nebraska where he and Jan also were high school youth group leaders. Since joining SMCC Dale has served on the Trustee Commission, acting as Facilities Committee chair. Dale has also served in leadership in Homebuilders and the current Crossroads Sunday School Class. Dale currently assists in leading a men's small group. Dale and Jan live in Pasadena and have three grown children, William serving in the Air Force in North Dakota is married to Nadine, Suzanne recently completed graduate school at the University of Nebraska and Kristine is a senior at Seattle Pacific University.
Larry James - Moderator
Larry has served in churches across the nation during his 35 year Air Force career, serving as Elder, Sunday School teacher, Small Group leader, building committee chairman and Trustee. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in 2013, he started work at JPL, and he and his wife Susan were clearly called to join SMCC that year. Since being at SMCC, Larry has served on the Crossroads Sunday School Class leadership team, taught classes in Crossroads, served on the Transition Team, currently leads a home group and is currently serving as an Elder. He and Susan live in Altadena and have two daughters, Alexis, married to Ryan, with granddaughter Junia, and Jocelyn.
David McKinley – Leadership Development Committee
David served in pastoral ministry prior to going to the Philippines. While there, he taught at a seminary and also had various leadership roles including overseeing the ministries and missionaries of a mission organization. Upon returning from overseas, he gave leadership within a denominational Home Office, which included being the Executive Director of international ministries for several years. He is presently teaching in the areas of leadership and spiritual formation at International Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Laura, live in Monterey Park and they have been at SMCC since 2013. David has been serving as an elder, teaching in the Crossroads class, functioning as the church liaison with our sister churches meeting on the SMCC campus, and leading a home Bible study group.
Bob Ver Burg – Leadership Development Committee
Bob Ver Burg is a retired public school teacher who lives in Arcadia. Along with his wife Patti, Bob has been part of the fellowship at SMCC since 1996. Together they are parents of three grown children. Bob served on the elder council from 2005-2011, then again from 2015 to the present. He has served as coordinator for adult classes at SMCC since 2009. More recently, he has served as a part of the Transition Team, chairing the missional subgroup of that team. He is also currently the elder responsible for the small group ministry here at SMCC.
